Remove a student or guest from the lesson

If someone is in the lesson who shouldn't be, remove them in two taps. And if they joined with the class code, joining with the code closes for the rest of the lesson.

Most lessons go by without ever needing this button. But if a stranger gets in, or a student decides to throw a party on the mic, you can remove them in two seconds.

Is the mic the only problem? You don't have to remove them: in the app or the browser, you can move them back to watching and listening, and they stay in the lesson. See Raised hands, speaking and chat.

Open the students list

  • In the app on a phone: tap "9/12 present" at the top, or any student's tile under the main picture, or More → Students.
  • In the browser: the Students button (on a computer, the list is already open on the side).
  • In the Windows app: click "9/12 present" at the top.

In the app, each student has a line: their name, with tags like "Can speak" and what they're doing right now ("Speaking", "Hand raised", "Camera on") under it, and two buttons next to them: the speak button, and the remove button (a person with a minus sign). The speak button is a person speaking for a student who's watching ("Let Mariam Ahmed speak"), and a mic with a line through it for a student who can speak ("Move Mariam Ahmed back to watching").

In the browser, the line shows the student's name, mic and camera icons, tags like "Can speak", and two buttons: the speak button, and the remove button (the same person with a minus sign). The speak button is a mic for a student who's watching ("Let Mariam Ahmed speak"), and a mic with a line through it for a student who's speaking ("Move Mariam Ahmed back to watching"). Raised hands get their own section above the list, "Raised hands".

Anyone who joined with the class code has "Joined with the code" under their name, in the browser and in the app, so you can tell guests from your own students.

Remove a student

  1. Press the remove button next to their name. If you hover over it with the mouse, you'll see "Remove Mariam Ahmed from the lesson".
  2. It asks: "Remove Mariam Ahmed from the lesson?" and says "They'll leave now and can't come back to this lesson."
  3. Press Remove. Changed your mind? Press No in the app, or Keep them in the browser.

After that:

  • The student leaves right away and sees "The teacher removed you from the lesson".
  • If they try to come back with the same link, they see "The teacher removed you from this lesson."
  • They can join the next lesson normally with their link. Removing only applies to this lesson.
  • Their attendance up to when they left is recorded as usual.

A guest who joined with the class code

A guest is anyone who joined with the class code and typed their own name, without a personal link.

When you remove a guest:

  1. The question also tells you: "If you remove them, joining with the class code closes for the rest of the lesson."
  2. When you press Remove, you'll see "Joining with the code is closed for the rest of the lesson. Students with their own links still get in."
The remove-guest question in the browser, with a warning that joining with the code will close
Removing a guest closes the code for the rest of the lesson

Why does the code close? So the person you removed can't come back a minute later under another name with the same code.

  • Other guests already inside stay as they are.
  • Anyone new who tries to join with the code sees "Your teacher closed joining with the code. Ask your teacher for your personal link."
  • Your students with their own links get in as usual.
  • In the next lesson, the code works again.

Have a real student who joins with the code every time? Add them to the class and send them their personal link. That way their name shows correctly, and a closed code never shuts them out. See The class code and permanent links.

"In the video, not on the list"

In the browser, you may find a section under the list called "In the video, not on the list (1)". These are people who are in the video but whose connection to the lesson keeps dropping, so they don't show in the normal list. Usually it's a student with weak internet. If you don't know one of them, remove them the same way.

Removed someone by mistake?

  • A student with their link: they can't come back to this lesson. The only fix is to end the lesson and start a new one, so everyone joins again. Or leave them until the next lesson.
  • A guest with the code: send them their personal link (add them to the class first), and they can join with it straight away.

Want to stop anyone new from joining?

Instead of removing people one by one, lock the door as soon as your students are in. See Lock the lesson door.
