Mic and camera permission on every device

Blocked the permission by mistake? Where to find the mic and camera permission on Android, Windows, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and iPhone.

For your students to hear and see you, your device has to allow Hessety to use the mic and camera. The first time, your device asks you, and if you chose "Block" or "Don't allow" by mistake (it happens to the best of us), here's where to find the permission on every device.

The Android app

The first time you open a lesson, Android asks if Hessety can use the mic and the camera. Choose While using the app for both.

The Android window asking for mic permission for the Hessety app
Choose “While using the app”

If you said no by mistake:

  1. Open your phone's Settings → Apps → Hessety → Permissions.
  2. Tap Microphone and choose "Allow only while using the app". Do the same for Camera.
  3. Go back to Hessety, and press "Back to lesson".

The menu names differ a little from phone to phone, but you'll always find them under Apps → Hessety.

The Windows app

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & security.
  2. Click Camera, turn on "Camera access", and also turn on "Let desktop apps access your camera".
  3. Go back and do the same under Microphone.
  4. Close Hessety and open it again.

Chrome or Edge on a computer

When you open the "Check your camera and mic" page, your browser asks you at the top. Click Allow.

If you blocked it before, you'll see a message on the page that starts with "The browser isn't allowed to use your camera and mic". Fix it like this:

  1. Click the icon to the left of the address (a lock or a small settings icon).
  2. Set Camera and Microphone to "Allow".
  3. Go back to the page and click "Try again". If that doesn't work, refresh the page.
The message The browser isn't allowed to use your camera and mic, with the Try again button, on the check page
Allow them from the icon next to the address, then “Try again”

On a Mac, you also need to allow the browser itself: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, then Microphone, and turn on Chrome or Edge.

Firefox

Click the crossed-out camera or mic icon next to the address, remove the block ("Blocked"), then refresh the page.

Safari on a Mac

From the Safari menu, choose Settings for followed by the website's name, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then refresh the page.

Android phone (Chrome)

  1. Tap the icon next to the address → Permissions.
  2. Make sure Camera and Microphone are allowed.
  3. Still not working? Your phone's Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions, and allow the camera and microphone.

iPhone or iPad (Safari)

  1. Tap aA next to the address → Website Settings.
  2. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow or Ask.
  3. Or go to the iPhone's Settings → Safari → Camera and Microphone.

Opened it inside WhatsApp or Facebook?

The browser inside these apps doesn't run the camera and mic well. If you see "Open this page in your browser", press "Copy the link" and open it in Chrome or Safari.

For students

These exact same places work for your students too. And if you want to send them something written just for them, send If your sound or camera isn't working.
