Uploading a video from your phone or computer

Upload from your phone or computer, then "your video is in line": we get it ready for your students and add the protection. That takes hours, not minutes, so we give you a clock time and tell you as soon as it's ready.

A protected video uploads straight from your browser, on your phone or your computer. Once it's uploaded, we get it ready for your students: we make several qualities so it plays on any connection, and we add each student's name and the hidden mark. That takes hours, not minutes, so we give you a clock time ("around 9 in the evening") and tell you as soon as it's ready. You don't need to wait next to it.

Before you upload

  • Any video from a phone camera or a screen-recording app works straight away. If it comes from an editing app, save it as "MP4".
  • Videos up to 15 GB and up to 5 hours. If it's bigger, export it at 1080 or 720. If it's longer, split it in two and upload each part into its own lesson.
  • If you film on your phone, 1080 is plenty. It still looks great on a phone, your space goes more than twice as far, and the video is ready sooner. 4K is very heavy, and we show it to your students at up to 720 anyway.
  • Uploading from a computer is faster and steadier, but a phone works fine.

Where to upload from

  • From the course editor: in any section, drag the video onto the big area, or tap choose it from your device. On a phone, tap Upload your first video from your phone and pick it from your gallery. Or tap + Lesson → Protected video → Upload a new video.
  • From "My videos": tap Upload a video, then put it in any lesson with Put it in a lesson.
  • Several videos at once: pick them all and we'll upload them one after another. You'll see, for example, "3 videos are waiting to upload".
  • The same video can go in several lessons or courses from "Choose from your videos", without uploading it again or counting it twice.

While it uploads

  • Each video gets a card with a circle showing how much is uploaded and how long is left: "Uploading… 42% · about 6 minutes left".
  • Pause stops the upload and Continue carries on from the same spot. Cancel cancels that upload only.
  • While it uploads you can type the lesson's name, switch on "Free preview lesson" and add a file.
  • Keep the page open until the upload finishes. On a computer you can keep working in another tab. On a phone, keep this screen in front of you, ideally with the phone on its charger. We keep the screen from turning off by itself while an upload runs (on most phones).
  • If you open WhatsApp or the screen turns off: the upload pauses and carries on by itself from where it stopped as soon as you come back to the page.
  • A video over 500 MB from a phone: you'll see "if you're on mobile data, it's better to upload it on Wi-Fi". It's not a block: tap Upload now if that's fine with you, or I'll wait for Wi-Fi.
  • If the internet cuts out: "The internet cut out, so we paused. As soon as it's back we'll carry on from 42% by ourselves." Nothing to do.

Closed the page before the upload finished?

When you come back you'll see "A video didn't finish: "Motion in a straight line" (63%)", with the file's details under it so you can find it easily in your gallery: its name, size and the day it was filmed.

  1. Tap Choose the file and pick the same video from your gallery.
  2. We carry on from where it stopped, not from the start.

Browsers don't let any website remember the file itself, which is why you need to pick it again. If you don't need it, tap Forget this video and you get the space back. An upload left paused for two days is cancelled by itself; just upload it again and it starts straight away.

"Your video is in line": after the upload

After the upload, the video goes through 4 stages, shown on its card and in "My videos":

  1. Uploaded ✓
  2. In line, for example: "In line: 3 videos before it". When its turn comes: "It's your turn!"
  3. Getting it ready: "We're getting it ready for every screen and adding its protection"
  4. Ready for your students ✓

A little after it's ready you'll see "The higher quality is ready too ✓". The video plays for your students from stage 4; the higher quality follows by itself, with nothing for you to do and no notification.

A clock time

Next to each video there's an approximate time, always with "around":

  • "Your video is in line… it'll be ready for your students around 9 in the evening, and we'll tell you."
  • If it's further away: "tomorrow around 7 in the morning" or "on Thursday around noon".

The time comes from the video's length, the videos ahead of it in line, and the speed we measure every day (nights are faster than days), rounded to the nearest half hour.

Why does it take hours?

Getting a video ready takes its time with us: an hour of teaching can take a few hours to be ready and protected with each student's name. And the line is fair between all teachers: every academy gets its turn, so nobody waits behind another teacher's archive.

Tip: upload the week's videos early, or at night before you sleep, and wake up to find them ready.

Your first video

The first video in your academy goes ahead of the line: "This is your first video, so we'll get it ready ahead of the line." So you see your first lesson ready quickly.

If we're late

If the time passes by more than an hour, it updates by itself: "We're running a little behind what we said, sorry. The new time is around 11 in the evening." We'll still tell you as soon as it's ready.

No need to wait

While the video gets ready you can name the lesson, switch on "Free preview lesson", upload the next one, or close the page altogether. You can publish the course too: we'll ask "Publish now and hide this lesson until it's ready, or wait?". If you publish, the lesson appears for your students by itself as soon as the video is ready.

Uploaded lots at once? "Get this one ready first"

If you upload your whole archive (say 15 videos), you'll see: "You uploaded 15 videos, great work! We'll get them ready one after another, and each one appears for your students as soon as it's ready. The last one will be ready around Thursday."

If your students need one lesson tomorrow, tap Get this one ready first next to it. It moves it to the front of your own videos in line, without taking another teacher's turn, and the new time shows next to it straight away.

If you upload a lot in one month

  • If you've uploaded a lot this month, your new videos get ready when no other teacher's videos are waiting, and each one still shows its time. That keeps the line fair for every teacher.
  • The most you can upload is 100 hours of video a month. If you reach it and need more, tap Message us on WhatsApp and we'll work it out together.

When it's ready

  • You get a notification in the bell on the website (and in the Hessety app if you have it): "Video "Motion in a straight line" is ready and protected ✓ Your students can watch it."
  • If you don't have your academy dashboard open at the time, you also get an email saying the same, with a button that opens the lesson.
  • If the video isn't in a lesson yet, the email reminds you to put it in one so your students can see it.

If something goes wrong

What you'll see What to do
"This file isn't a video we can play" Upload a video from a phone camera or a screen-recording app. If it's from an editing app, save it as "MP4" and upload it again.
"This video is bigger than 15 GB" Export it at 1080 or 720: it gets much smaller and stays clear.
"This video is longer than 5 hours" Split it in two and upload each part into its own lesson.
"This video is … GB, and you have … GB free" Delete a video you don't need (tap See the biggest videos), or talk to us if you need more space.
"This video has a problem and we couldn't get it ready" The file is probably incomplete or damaged. If it was filmed on a phone, upload it again from the gallery. If it's from an editing app, save it again and upload it.
"Something small went wrong on our side while getting this video ready, not on yours" We tried 3 times by ourselves and our team is looking at it. Tap Upload again, or Message us and we'll sort it out for you.
"The video didn't upload, probably the internet" Tap Try again and we'll carry on from where it stopped.

A video with a problem doesn't count towards your space.

Your space

  • What counts towards your space is the size of the video when you uploaded it. The qualities we make for your students and the protected copies are on us.
  • You'll find what's used and what's free in Your space on your academy dashboard, with "that leaves room for about … hours of video like yours".
  • If a video turns out very heavy (over 10 GB per hour), you'll see a tip to set your camera to 1080p.

"My videos" and deleted items

  • My videos has every video and file you've uploaded, each with its stage, its time and the lessons it's in.
  • Download the original: from the video's menu. It's your copy exactly as you uploaded it; keep it as a backup. If it's big, download it on Wi-Fi.
  • Delete: if the video is in lessons, we tell you which ones before you delete it. Right after deleting you'll see Bring it back.
  • Deleted items: anything you delete waits there for 7 days, doesn't count towards your space, and comes back with its lessons just as it was. After 7 days it's gone for good.
