Tips to keep your account safe

Simple things that protect your account, your students and your money, from your password to your students' links.

Your account holds your classes, your students' names and numbers, and your subscription. A few simple habits keep it safe.

Your password

  • Make it at least 8 letters or numbers, and better still, make it longer, with both letters and numbers.
  • Don't use the same password as your Facebook or your email.
  • Don't give it to anyone, even if they say they're from the Hessety team.
  • To change it while you remember it, open Account in the app or on the website, and in Your details press "Change password". If you've forgotten it, use "Forgot your password?". The steps are in Forgot your password, or want to change it.

Signing in with Google saves you from passwords altogether, and makes your account as safe as your Google account. See Sign in with Google.

The account is just for you

A subscription is for one teacher, and only one lesson can be running at a time. If two people use the same account, the one whose lesson is running stops the other from starting theirs, and if they open the same lesson from two devices, it moves to the second device and closes on the first. Every teacher should have their own account.

Shared devices

  • On a computer that isn't yours, don't tick "Remember me on this device" on the sign-in page.
  • Sign out of your account when you're done.
  • Forgot? Sign out of every device from Sign out of all devices.

When you pay

  • Only transfer to the number or address shown on the payment page inside your account. Never transfer to a number you get in a message or a call.
  • When you pay from the Android app, the payment page opens inside the app, with you signed in. If you see "Switch account", the browser was signed in to a different account: make sure the name and email are yours before you press "Continue as". And if you didn't open this page from the app yourself, press "Stay in my account".
  • Each student's link is theirs alone. If a student's link reaches a stranger, remove the student from the class and add them again: their old link stops working, and they get a new one.
  • The class code lets in anyone who has it. Send it to your students only, and it's better to rely on personal links. If a stranger joins with the code, remove them from the lesson, and joining with the code closes for the rest of the lesson.
  • Lock the lesson door once your students are in, so nobody new can join.

The Google Calendar link in Account is secret, and it has all your classes' times in it. Don't send it to anyone. If you sent it by mistake, press "Change link": the old one stops working straight away.

Messages to watch out for

  • "Your Hessety account's email was changed": if you get this and you didn't ask to change your email, reply to it or contact us at [email protected] right away.
  • "Change your Hessety password": if you get this and you didn't ask for it, ignore it. Your account is safe as long as nobody opens the link.
  • "You've been signed out on this device" on your phone when you didn't do anything: most likely someone changed the password or signed out every device. Sign in, and if you can't, change your password with "Forgot your password?".

If someone signed up with your email before you did

If someone created an account with your email without having access to it, and the email hasn't been confirmed yet, sign in with Google using the same email: Hessety knows the email is yours, the password they set stops working, and every device that was signed in gets signed out.
