Class attendance and absences

Attendance is recorded by itself in every lesson: who came and for how long, who was late, and who was absent. And you can remind the absent ones with a ready-made message.

No need to call out names: Hessety records attendance by itself in every lesson. Here you'll learn where to find it, how to read it, and how to remind the absent ones in two taps. And right after each lesson you get its summary, see Ending the lesson and attendance.

How is it recorded?

  • Present: anyone who joined the lesson, along with how many minutes they attended.
  • Late: if they joined 5 minutes or more after the lesson started, how late they were is written next to them in minutes.
  • Absent: a student in the class who didn't join the lesson at all. A student you added after a lesson isn't counted absent for it.
  • Code guests: they show up under the name they typed. And if one of your students joined with the code instead of their link, they're marked absent under their real name.

In the app

The Attendance tab

  1. Open the class from My classes and choose the Attendance tab.
  2. You'll find a chart of Attendance, last 5 lessons, and under it the last 3 lessons: the day, time and length, and "4/5 present", for example.
  3. Tap "All lessons" to see every lesson with names: who came and for how long, who was late, and who was Absent.

In the students list

Under each student's name on the Students tab, small bars show their attendance in the latest lessons. A student who missed the last two lessons or more is highlighted, with something like "Missed the last 2 lessons. Remind them?" under their name, and a message button instead of the link button next to them.

On Home

  • Attendance, last 5 lessons: the same chart. Tap the class name above it to pick another class.
  • If students missed the last lesson, you'll see something like "3 missed the last English lesson" with their names, and a "Remind them" button.

Remind the absent ones

  1. On Home, tap "Remind them".
  2. A note to those who missed it opens with a ready-made message, like "We missed you in the last lesson. The next one is Saturday 7:30 PM. See you there." Edit it however you like.
  3. Tap "Send". Each student gets the message in their own conversation with you.

You can also message one student from the message button next to them on the class page. The student sees the message on their link's page and in the Android app, and can reply to you.

On the website

  1. On Account, go to the class's card and click Attendance.
  2. You'll find the last 5 lessons. Each one shows the day, time and length, and "3/5 present", for example.
  3. Under each lesson are the names of those who came with their minutes and who was late, and an "Absent:" line with the names of those who missed it.

Get attendance in a spreadsheet

From Attendance, click "Export to Google Sheets": a spreadsheet with one sheet for the students and one for each lesson's attendance. Or download it as a CSV file that opens in Excel. The steps are in Google Calendar and Google Sheets.

Planning to delete a class? Export its attendance first, because after deleting it you won't see its attendance again.
