In the lesson: the buttons and how to take part

What each button in the lesson does, and how to raise your hand and talk, write in the chat, and answer your teacher's question.

You're in the lesson? Well done! You only have a few buttons, they're easy, and no button can break the lesson, so relax and try them out.

The buttons at the bottom

Button What it does
Mic Turns your voice on and off. If the icon is red with a line through it, it's off and nobody can hear you.
Camera Turns your video on and off. When it's on, your teacher and classmates can see you.
Raise hand Tells your teacher you want to talk.
Chat Writes a message to everyone in the lesson. A number on it = new messages.
Leave Takes you out of the lesson. It asks you first, in case you pressed it by mistake.
  • Can't find the mic and camera? Then you're there to watch and listen, because the lesson has lots of students, or your teacher moved you back to watching. That's totally normal: raise your hand if you want to talk.
  • In the Hessety app on a phone, the buttons are the same, but they're circles with no words: a mic, a camera, a hand, a speech bubble, and a red phone to leave.

When you join, your mic might be on. If it's noisy around you (the TV, your little brother, the washing machine), turn it off until you want to talk.

Want to talk? Raise your hand

  1. Press Raise hand. The button changes color, and you'll see "Your hand is up. Wait for your teacher to let you talk." (in the app: "Your hand is up" and "Your teacher can see it.").
  2. Wait for your teacher. When they let you, you'll see "The teacher let you speak. Your mic is on now.", and the Mic and Camera buttons appear.
  3. Talk away. When you're done, turn your mic off.

Changed your mind? Press Lower hand.

If your hand stays up for a while, don't be upset. Your teacher can see it, and might just be finishing an idea first.

  • Seeing "Your teacher saw your hand and will get back to you later."? Your hand went down, but your teacher saw it and will give you the floor when they can. If you still want to talk a bit later, raise it again.
  • Seeing "Your teacher moved you back to watching, so your mic and camera are off. Raise your hand to speak again."? Your teacher moved you back to watching and listening, usually to give your speaking place to a classmate. That's totally fine: if you want to talk again, raise your hand.

Write in the chat

  1. Press Chat.
  2. Type your question or reply in the box at the bottom.
  3. Press the send button (the arrow).

The chat: the teacher's messages are marked “Teacher”
  • Your message goes to everyone in the lesson, not just the teacher.
  • Your teacher's messages have "Teacher" next to them.
  • The chat is for questions and answers. "hahahaha" twenty times isn't a question.
  • Want to talk to your teacher on their own? Use Messages from your teacher before or after the lesson.

A question from the teacher

Sometimes your teacher asks a quick question, like "Got it?" or one with "A B C D" answers.

  1. A card that says "A question from your teacher" shows up, with the answer buttons under it.
  2. Tap your answer. It gets a check mark, and you'll see "Answer sent. You can change it until the teacher stops answers."
  3. Changed your mind? Tap another answer, as long as the teacher hasn't stopped the answers.

One tap on your answer, and you can change it
  • None of your classmates can see what you picked.
  • If the teacher shows the results, you'll see how many people picked each answer, and yours is marked "Your answer".
  • "Time to answer is up." means the teacher has stopped the answers.

What's on your screen?

  • The teacher: their video is big. If they're sharing their screen, you'll see "The teacher's screen" big, and them small in the corner. If they open the whiteboard, you'll see them writing on it.
  • Your classmates: anyone with their camera on shows up in a small box.
  • Who's talking?: whoever is talking right now gets a colored frame around them. In the Hessety app, it also says "Speaking" on them.
  • "Waiting for the teacher's camera…": the teacher hasn't turned on their camera yet. Wait a little. If it says "The teacher's camera is off for now, but you can hear them.", the sound is working fine.
  • "Turn your phone to see it bigger": when the teacher shares their screen or writes on the whiteboard, turn your phone sideways and the picture gets bigger.
  • Your name in faint letters, moving across the screen: that's normal. It's there to keep the lesson private to you and your classmates. In the Hessety app, screenshots don't work during the lesson, for the same reason.
  • "The lesson ends in 10 minutes.": a heads-up that the lesson is nearly over.

Leaving and coming back

  • Want to leave? Press Leave, and it asks "Leave the lesson?". Press Leave again, or Stay in the lesson (in the app: Stay) if you pressed it by mistake.
  • Left and want to come back? In the browser, press Back to the lesson, or open your link again. In the app, press OK, then Join in My lessons. This works while the lesson is still on.
  • Lesson over? You'll see "Lesson ended", and in the browser "Thanks for coming. See you next lesson." too. Bye for now!
  • Seeing "The teacher removed you from the lesson"? That means your teacher took you out of this lesson. If it was a mistake, talk to them. You can join the next lesson with your link as usual.
