I can't start the lesson

Pressed "Start lesson" and got a message? Every message, what it means and how to fix it, in the app and in the browser.

Take a breath, you haven't missed the lesson. When "Start lesson" doesn't work, Hessety always tells you why in a message. Find the message you got here, and you'll find the fix.

The 30-second fix

  1. Read the whole message. The fix is usually in it.
  2. Make sure your internet works: open any website.
  3. Close the app or the page and open it again, then press "Start lesson" one more time.

Didn't work? Read on.

If you see "Confirm your email first"

Your email hasn't been confirmed yet, and lessons wait for that. Open the "Confirm your email for Hessety" email and press "Confirm my email".

  • In the app, a window opens with "Send the email again" and "I've confirmed it".
  • In the browser, you'll see a "Confirm your email first" page.

The full steps are in Confirm your email.

If you see "Your subscription has ended, or this month's hours are used up"

Your subscription has ended, or your plan's hours for the month have run out. In the browser, you'll see it under the heading "Your plan needs renewing", with a "Choose a plan" button. In the app, it shows at the bottom with a "My plan" button.

If you see "Thanks for trying Hessety" or "Your free trial has ended"

Your free trial is over, and we hope you enjoyed it! To keep teaching, subscribe to the plan that suits you. In the browser, you'll see the heading "Thanks for trying Hessety" with a "Choose your plan" button under it, and in the app the message shows with a "My plan" button. Your classes, students and their links are kept just as they are. See When your free trial ends.

If you see "Your subscription ends in a few minutes"

A lesson won't start if your subscription only has a few minutes left, so it doesn't get cut off halfway. Renew first, from Renewal and when your subscription ends.

If you see "You've reached today's fair-use limit" or "You've used today's time"

You've used today's hours on your plan. The time comes back tomorrow, or you can switch to the Pro plan, which has no limits. See Plans and how they differ.

If you see "You have a lesson running" or "You have a live lesson"

There's a lesson still running in another class, and your account runs only one lesson at a time. You might have forgotten to end it.

  • In the browser, the page gives you a choice: "Go to that lesson", or "End that lesson" and then start here.
  • In the app, open the running lesson ("Back to lesson") and tap "End", or on the website, in Account, click "End lesson" on the class card marked "Live".

If you see "The lesson is open on" another device

The lesson is running in the Windows or Android app, or on another browser page.

  • Press "Continue here": the lesson moves to this device and closes on the other one, and your students stay in it.
  • Or "Keep it there", if you'll carry on from the other device.

If you see "The lesson is already starting from an earlier request"

You pressed "Start lesson" twice in a row. Wait a few seconds, and try again.

If you see "The video service isn't responding right now" or "We couldn't reach the video service"

  • Check your internet, wait a minute, and try again.
  • If the problem continues, message us from Messages → Hessety team.

Problems only in the browser

  • "Sign in again": your session on the website has ended. Press "Sign in", and you'll come back to the same page.
  • "This browser can't run the lesson": open the page in the latest version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
  • "Open this page in your browser": you've opened the page inside WhatsApp or Facebook. Press "Copy the link" and open it in Chrome or Safari.
  • "This class doesn't exist": the class was deleted, or the link is cut off. Go back to Account and start from the class's card.
